Suspended ceiling for the CERN

Geneva (Switzerland)

Metal cladding ceilings

Total weight: 125,000 Kg

Implementation period: 2022

The Science Gateway is a new facility at CERN designed by Renzo Piano, dedicated to science education and outreach. The complex consists of several buildings, the two most distinctive of which are two large suspended tunnels, reminiscent in their shape of CERN's particle accelerators.
In addition to the two tunnels, the other three buildings in which Bertazzon's work was concentrated are also elevated buildings above ground level, and the ground floor is therefore an open space. The subject of our intervention are specifically metal ceilings covering all these spaces, made of flat steel sheet and framing with angle brackets; the substructure supporting and attaching to the main structure of the buildings is also included.

A fundamental aspect of this project was the particular paint chosen by the architect for these elements, characterized by different color shades depending on the degree of illumination: while the aesthetic aspect is remarkable, it was equally essential to study a handling and packaging system that would not damage this paint, on pain of the unusability of the various pieces considering that every touch up is not feasible and acceptable.
