Chernobyl (Ukraine)

Stainless steel and mechanical structures for sealing and inspection of the Chernobyl Sarcophagus

Total weight: 110,000 Kg

Implementation period: 2016 - 2018

The securing of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant involves the construction of an arch-shaped sarcophagus cover to be placed over Unit 4 of the Nuclear Power Plant.
Sealing in the vertical head walls of the arch is provided by making concrete walls in the lower part and a plastic membrane in the upper part. The structures produced by Bertazzon called "Flashing Anchors" are the interface between the concrete walls, to which they are attached (both on the horizontal and vertical sections) with a mechanical system of bushings and pins, and the membrane, which is locked to the flashing by a specific stainless steel element.

All horizontally installed flashings are also equipped with access walkways protected by suitable guardrail from both the inner and outer sides; the inner ones serve exclusively for assembly operations of the structures, while the outer ones allow access for future maintenance.
